If yesterday was hot, today was hotter. Up to 36°C. So what did we do on our rest day. You've guessed it! We went for a walk.
We had two nights here so that we could walk up to the Bastei. This is one of the areas to visit in this part of Southern Germany for the rock formations. We started uphill in forest and were soon in what was an ancient river gorge. Towering cliffs either side and many enourmous boulders littering the terrain. When we got to the top it was a bit of a let down to find cars, and a 4* hotel etc. We thought walking was the only to get to the top.
However the walk was well worth it for the rock formations. The walk up took about 2 hours and we covered about 14 kilometres there and back. At the top we had great views of the Elbe valley to both the north and south. It really was a beautiful walk and well worth doing if you are ever in the area.
We had our evening meal in a restaurant in the town square. Thunderstorms are forecast for tomorrow!
