Friday 16 August. Niegripp to Bertingen.

Last night we stayed at Zum Deich in Niegripp and ate at the local pub. The pension was very similar to a British B&B in that you felt you were staying in someone's house which may be occupied by family members when you were not there.

They had a German Shepherd and some of the photographs of it looked just like CJ. It was 12 years old and was sadly showing similar problems with its hind quarters to those shown by CJ at a similar age. CJ's grandparents came from Germany.

We got an excellent breakfast and left just after 9:10 am. It was warmer than we expected out but we made good progress via Schartau (where the horse photograph was taken) to the ferry at Rogaetz. The ferry had a really slick method of automatically tying up to the landing stage. No extra personnel but the helmsman needed.

The ferry drifted slightly down river during the crossing, it was not a cable ferry, so after we got off we walked back upriver until we were opposite where we got on!

We visited a bakery in Rogaetz, with similar goodies to the Serendipty restaurant in Torquay, which we sometimes visit  with my older(?) sister. We had two delicious blueberry tarts and coffee.

We thought we had gone the wrong way leaving Rogaetz and turned back up to the Hauptstrasse but we were actually on the correct route. My route downloaded from the internet was out of date. However we only walked about a mile down the main road before we again reached the Elberadweg.

We stopped for a foot powdering ceremony and a rest before setting off for the last few km to our Hotel, La Porte, in the forest just south west of Bertingen. The last 2 km were shaded and very pleasant but earlier it had been so hot and sunny that we had started walking from shade tree to shade tree.

Today we walked 18.6 km in 5.5 hours. We deliberately delayed our walk so we could get into our room on arriving at our hotel.

Shiel took the last photograph of our hotel room at La Port. The rooms are effectively double room cabins in a quiet sylvan setting. The really important thing to note is that all our windows have mosquito/bug screens.
