Monday 19 August. Tangermuende day off.

Today was our day off in Tangermuende. We may have mentioned that most of Germany closes on Saturday and Sunday. Well lots of places, including quite a few museums and restaurants, also close on Mondays in Tangermuende!

The first couple of photgraphs show the old town gates of Tangermuende circa 1300-1400. They are said to be some of the most beautiful town gates in northern Germany. The next three slides show Fachwerk houses from the 17th century. They are quite modern because a lot of Tangermuende was destroyed by fire in 1617.

The next slide is of the Rathaus (townhall). There is a statue of Grete Minde outside the Rathaus, the young women who was accused of starting the fire that destroyed the city. She was burned at the stake.

Just before 11am, when St. Stephan's church opened, we went for a coffee in an ice cafe nearby. The coffee was terrible but the cafe itself had very interesting carved chairs. Some are shown in the next 3 slides.

St. Stephan's church itself is well worth a visit and there is a very interesting display on the renovation of the church organ at the back of the church.

The photograph of Shiel was taken at the Elbe gateway to the city. Her fingers are at the water level of the recent floods in June. The wide angle photograph shown next makes it clear that in June, Shiel, if standing in the same place, would have been completely immersed in flood water.

The final two photographs were taken of the town hall on the way back to our B&B from the Italian restaurant where we had our evening meal. The last photo is a blow up of its predecessor to enable you to see the 3 storks roosting on the roof of the town hall! Look at all the white guano on the roof!

We had a very good meal at an Italian restaurant in Toepfer Passage. We mention it as it is very difficult restaurant to see from the main streets and it provides reasonably priced food and wine.
