Storms again last night and as a result a little cooler today. We caught up on washing. As usual on our walks, I also posted back to my sister today about 2kg of clothes I had previously thought I couldn't do without.
Wittenberg is the heart of Protestantism but many of its buildings seem to have been sadly neglected in the past, probably thanks to Erich and his mates. However, as you will see from the scaffolding in many of the photographs below, that situation is now being rectified. In a few years the Castle church, and the church of St.Mary's should be fully restored.
The staute of the female striding out across the garden, outside Luther's house, is Katharina von Bora, the wife of Martin Luther.
There is a interesting comment on the past treatment of Jews in Germany in St. Mary's church and outside the SW corner of the church is a memorial to the 6,000,000 Jews murdered by the Nazis. There is a photograph of the monument below.
In the evening we walked back into town and had a very enjoyable meal in a restaurant appropriately, for us, named Carpe Diem. I had my first glass of Guinness on this trip. A guided tour went past with the guide dressed as in Martin Luther's time.
Wittenberg definitely has more of the feel of a university town than just a tourist destination.
