Wednesday 21 August. Hohenberg-Krusemark to Havelberg.

We had breakfast with the Trumpf family and one other guest, who was working in the area, and then we headed off for Schwarzholz and Rosenhof. On the way we passed a German 'gnome garden' and I took a picture so you could see an extreme case of the genre. I find them amusing.

We passed a place called York on the way, where there was a famous battle with Napolean which is still remembered. In view of my origins I thought it was worth a photograph.

At Rosenhof we took a deviation which should have been a short cut to the Sandau ferry. It was marked as suitable for horses. It was ok to start with but the number of frogs jumping about should have been a warning. The appearance of a lake, complete with swans, should have been another good clue.

The floods in June had changed things. I had to find a way through a very boggy area but we did eventually reach the Sandau ferry without getting our feet wet. We caught the ferry easily as it was held up on the far side waiting for a barge to come downstream.

My route to Havelberg, parallel to the main road, was quiet and we navigated it without problems. It entered Havelberg via an area allocated to small allotments, as we've seen many times before outside small towns.

We checked in at our hotel, The Biergarten, and then headed for Vodaphone to update my data plan. THEY WERE CLOSED. I can't post blogs or search the internet and book hotels until tomorrow after 9am!

We then went to have a look around the Dom/Cathedral. A beautiful old building dating from before 1000AD. The stained glass windows I have photographed date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Coming here from NZ these dates are incredibly old.

We came back to the old town to find a supermarket only to find we had to climb back up to behind the Dom again. We eventually found the Netto by which time we were ready for our evening meal.

We chose an Italian restaurant opposite the Dom. We had a starter of olives and peppers followed by salad and pizza. We both had wine and I had an expresso. We had a very pleasant meal with good service and an excellent view, see photograph.

We then headed back down to the Biergarten for a nightcap after which I took a couple of photographs looking back from the bridge over the Havel.

Today we walked 19km in about 5 hours.
